Roundabouts vs. Intersections: Which One Rules the Road?

In urban planning, one of the most heated debates centers around a simple question: roundabouts or intersections? Each has its own merits and drawbacks. But which one truly excels in terms of safety, efficiency, and sustainability? Let’s explore the data and dive into real-world examples.


The Roundabout Revolution: UK’s Safety Marvel

The UK leads the world in roundabouts, with over 25,000 in use. Why the popularity? Safety. Roundabouts reduce overall collisions by 37% and serious crashes by 75%, according to the UK Department for Transport. The city of Milton Keynes is a standout example, featuring numerous roundabouts and boasting one of the lowest accident rates in the country.

Data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reveals roundabouts can reduce fatal crashes by up to 90% compared to signal-controlled intersections. This is because roundabouts force drivers to slow down and yield, significantly lowering the risk of high-speed collisions.

American Intersections: The Safety and Efficiency Dilemma

In the United States, intersections are responsible for nearly 50% of all urban traffic crashes, according to the Federal Highway Administration. High-speed impacts, red-light running, and distracted driving are the main culprits. For instance, the intersection at La Cienega Blvd and Venice Blvd in Los Angeles has over 200 accidents each year, highlighting the dangers of traditional traffic lights.

American drivers also waste time and fuel waiting at red lights. On average, they spend 97 hours per year stuck in traffic, costing the U.S. economy $87 billion annually in lost productivity.

Roundabouts: Efficiency in Motion

Roundabouts are known for their efficiency. A single-lane roundabout can handle up to 2,000 vehicles per hour while reducing delays by 89%. In Swindon, UK, the famous “Magic Roundabout” has proven to be an effective solution for heavy traffic with minimal congestion.

Roundabouts also reduce emissions. The U.S. Department of Transportation found that switching from intersections to roundabouts can cut vehicle emissions by 30% due to reduced idling. Carmel, Indiana, often called the “Roundabout Capital of the U.S.,” has over 140 roundabouts and has seen a 40% drop in accidents, saving more than 24,000 gallons of fuel annually.

The American Shift: Embracing Roundabouts

Even in the U.S., where intersections have traditionally dominated, some cities are starting to embrace roundabouts. Texas, for example, reported a 50% reduction in crashes in areas where roundabouts were introduced. Kansas City, Missouri replaced several four-way stops with roundabouts, resulting in a significant drop in accidents within the first year.

From an economic standpoint, roundabouts are cheaper to maintain than traffic lights. A typical traffic light system costs up to $10,000 per year in maintenance and electricity, while roundabouts require minimal upkeep after installation.

Conclusion: The Clear Winner?

So, which is better: roundabouts or intersections? Roundabouts clearly have the edge in terms of safety, efficiency, and sustainability. They reduce crashes, save time, and cut down on emissions. Although retrofitting existing intersections can be costly, the long-term benefits make roundabouts a smart investment for cities looking to improve road safety.

As cities like Carmel and Swindon have shown, roundabouts aren't just quirky British road designs—they're a blueprint for safer, smarter, and greener urban planning. The next time you navigate one, remember: it's more than a circle; it’s the future of our cities.

New Austin blueprint envisions new direction for growth


After two years of debates and committee meetings, Austin officials have unveiled a broad vision for growth that condemns traditional suburban development and is garnering both praise and skepticism.
The proposed, 197-page "comprehensive plan" would be the city's official philosophy for managing a booming population and the new housing, businesses, shops and restaurants that will come with it. The plan, dubbed Imagine Austin, envisions mixed-use development along corridors serviced by transit and new centers of housing and commerce miles north and south of downtown.
The plan is intended to guide every city decision over the next three decades, from where to allow construction to how much to collect in taxes to managing the economy.
It is unusually blunt for a municipal document. It talks of rectifying past mistakes. It plans around big-ticket initiatives such as urban rail or significantly expanded bus service.
And it excoriates the city's rapid suburban growth, stating that the pattern of the past 60 years came "at a troubling price in terms of social segregation and isolation, (diminished) public health, air and water quality, loss of natural open space and agricultural lands, and climate change (while) driving up the public costs for roads, water lines and other infrastructure that must be continually extended to far-flung new development."
The document assumes that 700,000 more people will move into the city over the next 30 years, creating civic pressures the city should address. The plan was compiled by the city planning staff, which distilled input from the general public and a sometimes quarrelsome, 31-member citizen committee appointed by the City Council.

Admissions Requirements

Applicants must meet the general requirements of the Graduate School. A personal interview with the Director, Graduate Advisor or members of the landscape architecture faculty is strongly recommended. Three letters of recommendation are required, and it is suggested that at least two of the letters come from former educators or academic contact. Applicants also are required to submit scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Average GRE scores of successful applicants since 1998 have been approximately 550 Verbal and 550 Quantitative. Also required is a grade point average (GPA) of 3.00 as calculated by the Graduate School.
Applicants holding first professional degrees in landscape architecture, or in some cases degrees related to landscape architecture (such as architecture, engineering, environmental design, horticulture, interior design, planning, and the like) are required to submit portfolios reflecting the applicants' professional and/or academic experiences and interests. Portfolios are assessed according to proficiency in design, presentation and layout, technical skills, and content, similar to criteria used in design studios.
Applicants who have a weakness in one of the criteria for admission can enhance their credentials with strengths in the remaining criteria.
Applicants can be admitted according to four conditions: Unconditional; Provisional; Probationary; and, Deferred. Applicants who do not meet the criteria of one of these conditions will be denied admission to the Program.

Unconditional Admission

Applicants must possess a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Transcripts from all previous college or university work, along with scores from the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), and three letters of recommendation are required of all applicants. In addition, applicants should have a minimum Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0, as calculated by the Graduate School. Applicants holding the first professional degree in landscape architecture, or a related field, must submit a portfolio.

Visioning Vs. Modeling: Analyzing the Land Use-Transportation Futures of Urban Regions

In recent years, the use of visioning as a tool for developing regional land use scenarios has become rather common. Typically, visioning is performed in a cooperative of business owners, the community, and local officials, and results in a set of regional development goals for the region’s future. This is a very different approach to thinking about a region’s future than predictive models calibrated on historical data. In general, visions are created on the basis of stakeholder preferences. Consequently, direct comparisons of results for the two methods are not really relevant. However, it is important to understand how the two approaches differ and that both offer their own relative advantages from a planning perspective. In an effort to better appreciate what each approach offers, this paper compares and contrasts these two methods, featuring the Austin Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) as a case study. The preferred vision, produced by the Envision Central Texas (ECT) organization, offers the greatest potential for public involvement in identifying regional development goals for the future. The land use models have a strong theoretical foundation and allows for interactions with a transportation model. Moreover, the land use models have the potential to identify key strategies that can be used in achieving the region’s goals. Thus, the combination of these two approaches seems to offer the greatest opportunities for planners to achieve a future that accommodates all stakeholders.

PhD in Urban and Regional Sciences in Texas A&M University

The mission of the Ph.D. program in Urban and Regional Sciences is to develop scholars of distinguishing excellence in landscape, urban and environmental planning.
The goals of the program include creating a flagship doctoral program, based on a solid core curriculum and providing expertise in area of specialization that applies to planning, design, and/or land development problems of community, regional, national or international habitat systems. In educating professionals for research, education, and scholarship in the fields of planning, landscape architecture, and land development the program provides expertise in the research process and its application to planning, design, and/or land development issues.
The program accepts students interested in studying in one of its five concentration areas: transportation, sustainability, hazards management, health systems planning and policy, and community development and housing.
Urban and Regional Sciences students are participating in four research centers in the college, including the Hazard Reduction and Recovery Center, the Center for Housing and Urban Development, the Center for Health Systems and Design, and the Historic Resources Imaging Laboratory. These centers continue to unite the students and faculty in active research communities. The next generation of researchers, in their respective fields, is being introduced to researchers throughout the world in related areas. 
Students in the Urban and Regional Sciences program are required to take courses in four areas: research, analytic, theory, and specialty. The research, analytic, and theory areas each consist of three courses – two required of all students, as noted below, and one in the student’s area of specialization. Beyond these courses students are also required to take three to four courses in their area of specialization.

End of the Road for Eastside Urban Renewal?

So what are the odds that the tri-party agreement between the Austin Revitalization Authority, the UrbanRenewal Board , and the city of Austin will survive past the end of October, when it's due to expire? Apparently not high, if one judges by comments last week from members of the URB.
The agreement, which makes ARA the lead developer for trying to revitalize and protect the culture of the East 11th and East 12th corridors, has been maligned by many for failing to deliver on that goal, as ARA has accomplished a few projects on 11th but very little on 12th Street. Back in April, the Robertson Hill and Swede Hill neighborhood associations called for an end to the deal, in which the city provides substantial operational funding to the ARA.
More recently, URB Chair Ben Sifuentes said he's done with the tri-party and even thinks the URB itself, which oversees the 11th and 12th streets project, should go.
"The URB and the tri-party agreement didn't work," Sifuentes told the online city politics newsletter In Fact Daily. "Why do we need it? Why do we have it? Do away with them. The Urban Renewal Agency's sole power is eminent domain, and we've already gotten the land that we've gotten, and it can't be developed right now."

High speed rail in Texas: options

I already looked at the sorry condition of megaregional transit in Texas. But that could change quickly. At the megaregion conference, politicians – Republicans and Democrats — from Houston, Austin, Fort Worth, and College Station all called for connecting Texas with intercity passenger rail. They also agreed that highway-centric state government needs to pay more attention to rail, and indeed, TxDOT has created a (tiny) rail division. There’s a sense that a political consensus is building for megaregional transit. There are good ideas. But we’re a long way from building anything.
On a local level, political consensus is already showing results. Twenty years ago, Texas had no rail transit systems. Today, it has five (Dallas light rail, commuter rail, and streetcar, Houston light rail, and Galveston streetcar.) Both of those light rail system are in the process of massive expansion, Austin is about to open its first rail line, and Denton is building a diesel light rail line connecting to DART. In the planning stages: commuter rail in Fort Worth, a second commuter rail line in Dallas, commuter rail between Austin and San Antonio, commuter rail in Houston, and streetcars in Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin. (San Antonio is also in the early stages of a light rail/streetcar study.) Thus, within another decade, we could have 15 rail transit systems:

Transportation: Austin - Rail studies costing city millions, before public vote

Austinites won't get their say on the city's $1.3 billion urban rail plan until at least November of next year, when city leaders plan to ask permission to borrow at least $200 million to build a first phase.
Even so, the City Council this week will consider approving $1.2 million in spending related to the proposed 16.5-mile light-rail or streetcar system — $700,000 for a federally required environmental study and $500,000 for a joint project with Capital Metro to update the area's transit plan and a key transportation modeling program.
That spending would come on top of about $2.6 million already authorized for various consultant studies (about $1.6 million of it already spent). And officials anticipate authorizing another $300,000 later for public meetings and other work related to the environmental study. All told, the city expects to spend about $4.1 million on the project before seeking voters' approval to proceed with it.
That doesn't mean this up-front spending is wrongheaded, however, said Robert Spillar, director of the city's Transportation Department. The various studies, he said, are answering questions important to voters when considering such a huge investment and invasive construction project.
"The citizens of Austin are pretty sophisticated," Spillar said. "They want to know what the attributes of the project are, what the environmental impacts are, how you're funding it, et cetera, et cetera. So this is just all part of that due diligence."
